Saved by his medication wallet card

Norman hit his head on the door of his pickup. Within a few days his neighbor noticed he was acting strangely, walking with a limp, and unable to form words. The first thought was that he had a stroke. He was immediately taken to the local hospital where a CT scan revealed a subdural hematoma, which is a collection of blood within the cranium that was putting pressure on his brain. The local hospital was not equipped to deal with neurosurgery, so Life Flight transported Norman to a major medical center.

When Norman arrived in the Emergency Room, medical personnel searched his wallet for his ID and insurance card. Here they found a medication card and noted that he was taking Apixaban, also known as Eliquis.

Because the ER nurse found Eliquis on Norman’s medication card, surgery was delayed for three days in order to allow for the medication to get out of his system. A craniotomy was performed and the hematoma was removed. The good news is that Norman is healthy and back to walking his dog every day. However, if surgery had been performed immediately, as is the standard of care in that situation, Norman most likely would have died on the operating table due to uncontrollable bleeding.

Justin received his medical degree from Columbia University’s joint program in international health with Ben-Gurion University in Israel.  He then completed an internship in medicine with Harvard Medical School, at the Cambridge Hospital, and residency in family medicine with the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

It is a very thin and durable card, equivalent in size to a business card that fits perfectly in a wallet. Medication cards should be given to each healthcare provider and pharmacy, so that everyone involved in your healthcare is on exactly the same page with regard to your medications, dosages, and any potentially life threatening allergic reactions you may have.

Medication cards are most useful when in the Emergency Room (ER), where the doctors may need to urgently know what daily medications you take or perhaps what medications you may have missed and need immediately. When in the ER or in any healthcare setting, it can be difficult to remember the names and dosages of each pill you take. This is especially true in a stressful circumstance, or when there is pain, trauma, confusion, or perhaps even unconsciousness. The Covid-19 pandemic has further complicated communication between patients and their providers, due to restrictions in visitors and guests. A person's spouse or children may not be permitted into the ER or hospital with them, making it that much more challenging to convey important information such as medications and allergies.

One of the biggest weaknesses of the healthcare system in the US is the fact that most hospitals and doctor-offices use different electronic medical record software. The different systems rarely share information with each other. So doctors, pharmacies, and other providers frequently fail to have any communications about medications. This lack of communication puts people at risk. People also use different pharmacies for different medications, which means the pharmacists won't know if they are filling a prescription for a drug that might interact with something else you're taking. Mistakes are incredibly easy to make in the medical field, and happen more often than you'd believe. Carrying a medication card in your wallet can save your life or the life of a loved one.

Yes, you could in fact keep a folded piece of paper in your wallet with your medications listed on it. However, in reality nobody actually does that, and even if you were to do it, there is no guarantee that the paper would be found by the ER nurse looking for your ID and insurance card in your wallet. And even if the nurse miraculously finds the piece of paper, there's no way to know that he or she will be able to read each medication and drug allergy listed. Our medication cards are paper thin but incredibly strong and tear proof, water proof, and printed in large easy to read font. The card should be placed directly behind your ID or insurance card, so that it will be identified right away in the emergency room, and will be easy to read for any of your providers. Also, because it is so thin and light, it won't bulk-up and weigh-down your wallet. As a retired Emergency Room physician I know first hand how dangerous it can be when a doctor doesn’t know all of a patient’s medications, doses, and drug allergies. A medication card is such a simple solution, yet hardly anybody carries one in their wallet, and most people don’t remember all of their medications and dosages. I also support the other patient advocacy aspects of this company. Our current healthcare system leaves many individuals struggling to pay their medical bills and sometimes unable to get optimal care. Patient Advocate Alliance is doing something worthwhile and important.
